AI Systems Need Kernels, Not Chatbots

Article Content The “Chatbot” metaphor has poisoned our architectural thinking. It suggests that the primary interaction with AI is a conversation. But in an industrial or automated context, an AI component is just a process. It needs scheduling, resource allocation, and, crucially, access control.

The Kernel Metaphor In an operating system, user-space processes (your apps) cannot directly access hardware. They must request access through the kernel. The kernel validates the request against the process’s privileges and resource availability.

AI as a Process We should treat our AI models as isolated processes. They should not have access to the file system, the database, or the network. Instead, they should request these resources from an “AI Kernel”—a supervisor layer that governs the model’s capabilities.

Context Management One of the biggest failures in AI systems is context leakage—where an AI model gets “lost” in a chat history. A kernel-style architecture would manage the context window as a form of memory management, clearing and reloading state based on the specific task requirements.

Isolation By isolating models, we prevent cross-pollination of sensitive data. If one AI process is compromised by a prompt injection, the kernel prevents that compromise from spreading to other processes or the underlying system.

Conclusion Chatbots are for interaction. Kernels are for infrastructure. If we want AI to power production systems, we need to stop building chatbots and start building kernels that treat AI as a managed, constrained component.
